BCS Students compete in Speech Meet

On October 28, Baldwin Christian School held its first Speech Meet. At the Meet, students in grades 1-12 competed for top ranking against others in their classroom. The winners in each category presented their pieces at an all school assembly on the 29th.

Anne Shaw, BCS rhetoric teacher, said that, 'The annual speech meet is one way of preparing students to communicate with poise, clarity, and confidence. The art of public speaking - not just speaking in public, but speaking clearly, forcefully, winningly - is largely lost in our culture, but for centuries it has been a mainstay, not only of public life but of education.  As students move through a classical education, they learn all of the usual school subjects, but also Latin, logic, and, finally, rhetoric.  Rhetoric is where they take all of the education they've had and fuse it into clear, logical, beautiful communication.'

The award winners in each class were: Sadie Jones (1st place), Joy Webb (2nd place) and Klay Lorentz (3rd place) in 1st Grade; Joel Blumer (1st place), Isaiah Mitchell (2nd place) and Hope Webb (3rd place) in Grades 2 & 3; Gretchen Hunt (1st place), Falyn McCracken (2nd place) and Brianna Bloomdahl (3rd place) in Grades 4-6; Jenna Blumer (1st place), Daniel Baumann (2nd place) and Christina Swanson (3rd place) in Grades 7 & 8; Stephen Hokanson(1st place),  Karsten Halverson  (2nd place) and Aaron Rens (3rd place) in Grades 9-12.
